Why managers fail

Time and again, the public is confronted with the downfall of people working in high-profile positions in business or politics. Those affected are then either given a ‘golden handshake’, disappear into private life, or sometimes even end up in prison. Yet the consequences for others can be far-reaching: job losses, falling returns, failed mergers, bankruptcy or, in some cases, even widespread economic crises. This lecture examines, from various psychological perspectives, the factors that contribute to such failures – ranging from unfavourable personality traits in the individuals concerned, through shortcomings in their day-to-day behaviour, working conditions and socio-psychological effects, to weaknesses in human resources management. The lecture concludes with a discussion of how employers can protect themselves from such failures through effective human resources management.

From the Job Profiler to user management – getting to know e³ skillware and using it effectively
